Big Scioty’s first contra dance of 2026 will feature the incomparable Gaye Fifer and the always delightful Hot Coffee Breakdown.
Gaye is an internationally known caller whose clear instruction and friendly style make contra dancing fun for beginners and experts alike. Hot Coffee Breakdown—a Louisville-based trio featuring Tom Cunningham on fiddle, Kate Sanders on keyboard and Luis de Leon on percussion—lives up to its name with tunes that are guaranteed to keep the energy level high.
When, where: The dance runs from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at our winter home, First Congregational Church, located next to the art museum at 444 E. Broad St. in downtown Columbus. If you’re new to contra or a little rusty, plan to arrive at 7:30 p.m. for a quick and easy lesson.
Role terms: Most of our callers use “larks and robins,” while some use the more traditional “gents and ladies.” But no matter which terms are used, dancers are welcome to dance whatever roles they prefer. These are, after all, only roles!
Cost, parking, etc.: Admission is $10 ($7 for members), $5 ($3) for ages 12-26, free for children under 12. Ample parking is available in the church lot. Feel free to bring a snack to share, and please bring a reusable water bottle for your own use.
