Some matches were meant to be!
Richard Ades was scheduled to call an All Soles dance in February, but when January’s snowstorm kept another caller away, he ended up switching dates and sharing the stage with the Pegheads. Fast forward to Big Scioty’s upcoming May dance, which Richard was scheduled to call with a band that, due to another unexpected development, was forced to cancel. The result is that Richard will now call the dance with—you guessed it—the Pegheads!
Fortunately, the longtime caller and the veteran old-timey band enjoy each other’s company due to their shared love of contra. Expect Big Scioty’s last dance of the 2025-26 season to be a joyful occasion for all concerned!
When, where: 8 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at Clinton Heights Lutheran Church, 15 Clinton Heights Ave., Columbus. If you’re new to contra dance or a little rusty, plan to arrive at 7:30 p.m. for a quick and easy lesson.
Role terms: Most of our callers use “larks and robins,” while some use the more traditional “gents and ladies.” But no matter which terms are used, dancers are welcome to dance whatever roles they prefer. These are, after all, only roles!
Cost, parking, etc.: Admission is $10 ($7 for members), $5 ($3) for ages 12-26, free for children under 12. Parking is available in the church lot or on neighborhood streets. Feel free to bring a snack to share, and please bring a refillable water bottle for your own use.
Annual meeting:
Big Scioty will discuss the past year and its plans for the future at a Zoom meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 18. Officers for the 2026-27 season will also be announced during the meeting following an upcoming board election.
Voting in the election is open only to current members and sponsors, who will receive online ballots in the coming weeks. However, the annual meeting is open to anyone who cares to join in. A Zoom link will be provided to everyone on our mailing list.
Want to run for a board seat?
Big Scioty’s board currently consists of Richard Ades (talent coordinator), Ellie Nowels (at-large member), Sal Pinkham (treasurer) and Martha Shaw (volunteer coordinator). The group’s bylaws actually call for the board to have five members, including one additional at-large member. If you love contra dance and think you might enjoy serving on the board, please contact Ellie Nowels at bigsciotycontra@gmail.com for more information.
