The Hollertones

Big Scioty’s October contra dance will feature Athens-based talent and your last chance to register for Columbus’s annual dance weekend at a discount! (For more information on Winter WarmUp, see below.)

Kim Thompson will guide our steps on Saturday, drawing from a virtually unlimited repertoire because she prides herself on never calling the same dance twice! Tunes will be provided by the Hollertones, a lively quartet consisting of veteran performers Jeanie Creamer on fiddle, Paul Brown on banjo, Linda Scutt on guitar and Nick Weiland on double bass.

When, where: 8 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 at First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus. If you’re new to contra dance or a little rusty, plan to arrive at 7:30 p.m. for a quick and easy lesson.

Cost: Base price is $10 for ages 27-plus ($7 for members), $5 for ages 12-26 ($3 for members), free for children under 12. Flexible pricing: Those who are willing and able are urged to pay a little more (up to $20 for ages 27-plus, $10 for ages 12-26) to help us meet our ever-expanding costs.

Role terms: Most of our callers use “larks and robins.” But whether they use these terms or the more traditional “gents and ladies,” dancers are welcome to dance whatever roles they prefer. These are, after all, only roles!

Parking, etc.: Ample parking is available in the lot off North Ninth Street. Feel free to bring a snack to share. And please bring a refillable water bottle for your own use.

Winter WarmUp: Oct. 3 is the deadline for registering at the Early Bird rate: $120 for ages 31-plus, $60 for those 30 and under. You can register at Saturday’s dance and pay via cash, check or Zelle. (Online registration is also available.) Central Ohio’s annual dance weekend runs Dec. 4-6 at the Worthington Community Center and features calling by Gaye Fifer and River Abel, along with music by the Mean Lids and Raven & Goose.
