This weekend’s Big Scioty Contra Dance will run longer than usual so that we can include a late-night session of electro contra. If you’ve never tried this electronically fueled version of contra, now’s your chance!

For most of the evening, caller Frank Buschelmann will lead us through an assortment of regular contra dances accompanied by Strawberry Space Jam. Though the band may not be familiar to you, its members hail from other bands that probably are. Kristen Planeaux plays keyboard for the Ripples, Ben Smith fiddles with the Mean Lids, and Vickie Stohl frequently plays percussion for Baba Yaga’s Stew.

Around 10:30 p.m., Ben will put down his fiddle and transform himself into his alter ego, DR Shadow. This deejay extraordinaire will then provide an hour’s worth of driving, club-type music while Frank announces the moves. Despite the extra treat, admission to the dance remains the same: $8 ($7 for members), or $4 ($3) for ages 12-26. Children under 12 dance for free.
