History of the Big Scioty Contra (Barn) Dance

The name Big Scioty came from the name of an old-time fiddle tune and also the nickname of Columbus’ principal river, the Scioto. The idea for the Big Scioty Barn Dance came out of the friendship of long time dance caller Kathy Anderson and musician Andrea (Andi) Ardito’s. When they met in 1982 Andi had been playing New England, Old-Time, and Irish music in Columbus with the Turkey in the Straw for 9 years. Kathy had been dancing calling squares and contras as well as playing banjo for many years. They soon began planning to start a dance group which endures to this day!
